Baptist Children’s Homes Thanks Community Friends
at 48th Annual Conference
September 13, 2007
Children living at Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina’s (BCH) western North Carolina residential facilities and BCH staff members showed their appreciation to its community friends at the 48th annual Western Area Conference on Thursday, September 6. The conference is held at BCH’s Broyhill Home in Clyde inviting the community to visit the campus, greet the children in care, and witness a special program by children and staff members. BCH operates Broyhill Home, Haywood Mountain Home in Waynesville, and Moody Ministries in Franklin.
“The Western Area Conference gives us an opportunity to thank the countless individuals who give of themselves to make this ministry possible,” said BCH Western Area Family Services director Linda Morgan. A nonprofit institution, BCH depends on the generosity of churches, businesses, and other friends to meet the daily needs of children.
This year’s conference gave BCH the opportunity to thank some very special community partners. BCH president Michael C. Blackwell and Morgan presented “Friend of Children” awards to representatives from the Haywood County School System and Haywood Pediatrics and Adolescent Medical Group.
“For more than 20 years, Haywood Pediatrics has met the medical needs of BCH residents,” Morgan said. “The medical staff makes itself available 24 hours a day and seven days a week to care for these children who in many cases are abused and neglected. The entire staff give their all to meet these children’s needs.”
BCH residents attend public school in the Haywood County School System. They ride the bus, attend classes, and participate in other school related activities side by side with other community children.
“Attending public school helps the children have as normal a childhood as possible,” Morgan said. “Without the acceptance of our school system we would not be able to serve all the array of children that we do.”
Approximately 600 guests attended this year’s conference. Blackwell and Stan Welch, President of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, were the speakers. Butts on the Creek BBQ in Maggie Valley donated the meal for the event.
Since 1885, Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina has helped children and families. BCH began with one campus, Mills Home in Thomasville, but now provides services in communities across the state.
